Most players use putters inside the circle and for short approach shots, but plenty throw them off the tee on tight wooded holes where control beats distance. A putter that lands flat and stays put is worth more than a driver that skips into trouble. Grip matters more here than on any other disc, so plastic choice is worth paying attention to.

If you are buying your first disc, buy a putter. It will teach you a clean release faster than anything else and it stays useful forever. Experienced players tend to carry several, often the same mold in different plastics for putting, driving, and approach.
